According to Nagasaki Prefecture media reports, this non-governmental organization is called "Military Toxic", which specializes in investigating and exposing the impact of toxic substances leaked from US military bases on the surrounding environment and human health. Members of the organization collected samples from rivers near the Sasebo US Military Base and a US military ammunition depot in Nagasaki Prefecture on the 28th, and then sent the samples to US research institutions to test the content of perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances.
The organization plans to collect samples at 38 locations around US military bases across Japan, and is expected to announce the results of the investigation on its website this year.
Perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances are difficult to degrade and will accumulate in the environment and human body, so they are called "permanent chemicals." Experts point out that long-term and large-scale drinking of water contaminated by such substances may affect reproductive health and children's growth and development, and even cause breast cancer, prostate cancer and other diseases.
Recently, it has been revealed that the water and soil near the US military bases in Japan contain excessive levels of perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and blood test results of nearby residents were abnormal.
