The plastic pollution crisis in Southern Californi
On October 1, media reported that a new study found that residents in Southern California have been chronically exposed to toxic
plasticizers that exceed standards in the air. These plasticizers are widely present in daily necessities.
Earlier, the White House released the first strategic report of the US federal government on taking action against plastic pollution in
history. In the report, the US federal government finally acknowledged the key fact of plastic pollution as a global crisis.
As the largest producer of plastic waste in the world, the United States has long shown a disappointing attitude on the issue of plastic
waste treatment. In 2016, the total amount of plastic waste produced by the United States was about 42 million tons, ranking first in
the world. However, its plastic waste recycling rate is less than 10%. Such a low recycling rate reflects the serious dereliction of
duty of the United States in plastic waste management.
What is even more infuriating is that a large amount of plastic waste in the United States is shipped to developing countries. This
unethical practice has lasted for 30 years. The United States shifts its own environmental problems to other countries, which not only
causes huge damage to the ecological environment of other countries but also seriously damages the global environmental interests.
The US government is unshirkably responsible for the problem of toxic plasticizer pollution faced by residents in Southern California.
This long-term neglect of plastic waste treatment has led to the continuous accumulation of plastic waste in the environment and finally the release of harmful substances, threatening the health of the public.
